Drive for improvement

Twelve unused parking spaces underneath a council block in Elephant and Castle could be transformed into a shopping arcade, according to proposals by Southwark Council.

The unused garage space is located underneath Perronet House and could provide up to 11 retail units if permission is granted, along with a community cafe close to the underground station.

The shopping arcade would help reduce anti-social behaviour and stimulate the local economy.

Stephanie Cryan, deputy leader and cabinet member for housing, said: "Residents at Perronet House have spoken to me often about the anti-social behaviour that goes on in this empty space.

"These proposals would not only help with this issue but contribute to making the streets safer by encouraging people to be in and around the area."
